Cervical Cancer Screening Camp
During my visit to India, I had the privilege of participating in a mobile health clinic day organized by the Public Research Institute of India in a nearby village. The purpose of these clinics is to provide pregnant women with antenatal care, HIV testing, PMTCT education, and confidential counseling from certified professionals, all free of charge. This initiative was developed in response to the high incidence of cervical cancer cases in India, which is attributed to a lack of awareness about women's health. Cervical cancer is a prevalent cancer worldwide, accounting for over 80% of cases in low- and middle-income countries. Unfortunately, despite being preventable, many women in India still lose their lives to this disease. PHRII has been working to detect precancerous lesions, raise awareness, and conduct research for over a decade. My experience with this organization highlighted the immense impact a small nonprofit can have on a community.
